Japanese teens get local experience

A group of 17 Japanese teenagers arrived Friday as part of the Corning Sister Cities exchange program, and were treated to a welcome picnic at Spencer Crest Nature Center.
The group is from Kakegawa, Japan, and is accompanied by three adult chaperones -- a translator, a math teacher, and a Buddhist monk who is the program coordinator, explained Carole Fimlaid of Corning Sister Cities.
The group will be spending four days in Corning, staying with 12 host families.
“It’s always fun to show off your area,” Fimlaid said. “We take them to the Watkins Glen gorge, the glass museum. They always seem to like Market Street and Wegmans. Supermarkets are a lot different over in Japan."
Two outings with the entire group are planned -- a pool party Sunday, and a trip to Niagara Falls on Monday.
After that, the Japanese visitors will go to New York City and Washington, D.C. before flying back.
A group from Corning spent time in Japan earlier this summer.
“Kakegawa became a sister city largely because there’s a Corning Inc. plant there,” Fimlaid said. Corning also has sister city exchanges with San Giovanni Valdarno, Italy and Lviv, Ukraine.
