CORNING, NY - Corning Headquarters recently hosted a visit with teachers from Corning's sister city of Kakegawa, Japan, located near the Display Technologies plant in Shizuoka.
Kakegawa City Deputy Mayor Imura and three other visitors were given a welcome party hosted by Corning Mayor Richard Negri. Then the guests enjoyed a tour of Corning Museum of Glass
Welcoming the Deputy Mayor’s delegation to Corning Headquarters were Emily Simon, global property risk manager with Finance, who had spent about seven years in Tokyo and also worked at the Shizuoka Display Technologies Plant for a year. John O’Hare communications director for Display Technologies, and Beth Dann, Director of External Communications for Corporate Communications
The deputy mayor said ‘Corning Incorporated is a very critical partner for Kakegawa City and we wish to maintain our friendship into the future.’ He presented the company representatives with a ceramic vase by a noted Kakegawa artist and a tablecloth made of Kakegawa’s signature kudzu fabric.
Corning executives also met and spoke with the delegation. A headquarters tour includes a viewing of the many glass sculptures displayed throughout the building.
This latest visit was part of longstanding tradition between the two cities. Corning and Kakegawa’s official relationship dates back to 1990, shortly after company operations started in Shizuoka. Regular visitor exchanges have helped expand and strengthen the ties.
In July, for example, high school students from Corning stayed in the homes of Kakegawa residents. The August delegation from Kakegawa brought about 20 members to visit various hosts in the Corning community.
