Corning|Yuki Mitsuhashi is one of nine Kakegawa, Japan, High School students who really enjoyed visiting the Corning Museum of Glass and touring Corning Painted Post High School Thursday on the group’s first day in the Crystal City.

“I’m having fun of course, “Mitsuhasi said, while working with glass at the Fun with Glass Program at CMOG’s west room studio. “I’ve never been to America before. Now I’m in New York. I love baseball, the Yankees. It will be fun.”

John Fisher, chairman of the Kakegawa, Japan, Sister Cities, said Kakegawa, Japan, High School students visit Corning every August.

“This is a great time for the students to come because it’s an Olympic year, Fisher said. “It’s nice to have that connection. It makes me really excited and it makes me feel like the world is a smaller place.”

Mayer Rich Negri welcomed the Kakegawa students, ages 15-17, and two adults, to corning Thursday morning at a breakfast at the First Congregation United Church.

“I’m very proud of our Sister Cities programs,” Negri said. “It gives us an opportunity to exchange cultures which is beneficial to all of us. It brings us all together. I think it’s a wonderful experience.”

Kakegawa students will visit Niagara Falls, Canada, today enjoy open days with local families featuring BBQ’s and a pool party, before traveling to New York City and Washington D.C. next week.

“I love all of Japan,” Fisher said. “I have a lot of experience traveling there and always feel very welcome and very safe.

It’s like a second home for me. I love it. I hope after this trip they feel the same was about America.”

Kakegawa students include Takaaki Sugiyama, Nagomi Urayama, Hinaka Goto, Keisuke Saito, Kazuaki Yoshino, Sayuri Shiokawa, Reina Hirakawa, Minami Ogura, Makimi Sugawa and Yuki Mitsuhashi.

The Corning Sister Cities Association was established in 1987 to promote peace through mutual respect, understanding, and cooperation – on individual, one community at a time.”

Corning currently has three sister cities: Lviv, Ukraine; Kakwgawa, Japan; and San Giovanni Valdarno, Italy.
