A Message to the Residents of Okuma-cho from the Employees of Corning Incorporated with Our Heartfelt Wishes for Your Swift Recovery
May 27, 2011
We are employees of Corning Incorporated, an American company based in Corning, New York, that manufactures glass for liquid crystal displays (LCD), display cover glass called Gorilla® Glass, optical fiber, emission control products and others. Corning Japan’s Shizuoka Plant is located in Kakegawa City in Shizuoka Prefecture, and exchange activities are carried out between Corning and Kakegawa as the two cities have a Sister City relationship.
We at Corning Incorporated were horrified by the news of the Great East Japan Earthquake. It must be very uncomfortable and disquieting for you to have to live away from your homes in evacuation centers for such an extended period of time.
Although we are far away from you, we wanted to do something for you. Talking among ourselves, one Corning employee told us that in Japan it is customary to fold Senbazuru paper cranes when wishing or praying for something. This was the first time for many Corning employees to fold paper cranes, but we did our very best to fold them with our best wishes for you in our hearts and thoughts.
Through the kind cooperation of the Kakegawa Municipal Office, we would like to present you with these Senbazuru paper cranes, which are being delivered to you along with relief supplies from Kakegawa City.
If we can assist you in further in any way, please do not hesitate to contact us. We sincerely hope that you will be able to return to Okuma-cho very soon.
