日本語は、事実のみを述べるように出来ている。実況放送、現状報告の内容ばかりの発言をしている人は、当人が対岸の火事を見ているようなもので、本人の直接行動を期待することはできない。意思のあるところに方法があるといわれているが、意思の無いところには、方法もない。それで、無為無策といったところか。日本の政治はその表れである。

意思は未来構文の内容で、日本語には、その未来構文が無い。だから、日本人は未来のことを組織的に考えることが難しく、この国には何でもそろっているにもかかわらず、ただ夢・希望だけが無い。未来社会の内容をはっきり描いて励むのでなければ、現実対応にも矛盾が生じて建設的なものにはならない。

Professor Terashima is an accomplished scientist but also an acutely observant philosopher and sociologist whose critical ideas are deeply penetrating. What he writes will give his readers much cause for reflection. His contribution is that he articulates through carefully structured analysis what the Japanese have for a while but only vaguely suspected about themselves.
