「ボランティア活動を普及させようとすれば、それは強制になる」という反対者がいる。ボランティアは自由意思に人であるから、強制の逆であるはずだが、我が国ではそう簡単にはならない。意思　(will) は未来構文の内容であるが、日本語には未来構文はない。意思のない日本人には、意思も自由意思の意味も理解できない。意思薄弱 (weak-willed) ともいえる日本人の前で力説すれば、それは強制と結果的に変わりないということになる。言霊 (the spirit of language) の効果によるというものであろうか。これも、「日本の常識は世界の非常識、世界の常識は日本の非常識」の例であろう。

Professor Terashima is an accomplished scientist but also an acutely observant philosopher and sociologist whose critical ideas are deeply penetrating. What he writes will give his readers much cause for reflection. His contribution is that he articulates through carefully structured analysis what the Japanese have for a while but only vaguely suspected about themselves.
