日本人は、発言の個人的特性に焦点を合わせることができない。
言い換えれば、ご唱和の内容にしか注目する価値がないものであると信じているからである。

個人発言の特徴は未来構文の内容に表れる。
ところが、日本語には未来構文がない。
だから、未来の内容を自分自身で考え出すことも、他人の考えを頭にしまいこむことも困難である。
だから英米人の発言を英文和訳しても、英米文化を読み取ることは難しい。

Professor Terashima is an accomplished scientist but also an acutely observant philosopher and sociologist whose critical ideas are deeply penetrating. What he writes will give his readers much cause for reflection.
